We’ve had some brilliant results this season, and with a few photos below to show for it, we thought it was the perfect moment to talk about what comes next: getting your hedges ready for autumn and winter.
A Season of Great Hedges
Whether it’s a tidy laurel hedge in a Shaftesbury front garden, a long boundary run of leylandii near Mere, or a neat box hedge framing a border in Motcombe, evergreen hedges are one of the hardest-working features in any garden. Trimmed well, they give structure, privacy, and colour all year round — but only if they’re cut at the right time and in the right way.
Why Autumn Is Country Hedging Season
As the evergreen trimming season winds down, our attention turns to country hedging — the mixed, native hedgerows found along field boundaries, driveways, and rural properties throughout Dorset and Wiltshire. Unlike ornamental garden hedges, these hedgerows are protected during the bird nesting season, so cutting is restricted between 1 March and 31 August. Once that window closes, autumn becomes the ideal — and legal — time to get country hedges cut back before winter sets in.
